Welcome
Time to kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the grass and relax
with another newsletter from the crew at boardgames.co.za.
A big congratulations to the winner of our November competition – “Okkie
C” from Kimberley, enjoy your copy of Carcassonne, courtesy of all of us
here at boardgames.co.za. And remember, you too stand a chance of
winning just because you have subscribed to our newsletter.
The newsletter is filled with goodies – once again we have a more
in-depth look at one of the games in our catalogue, along with another
sizzling offer. We take a (kind of) journey of a different kind with our
look at NAG, the magazine that caters for computer gamers, geeks and
anime otaku.

NAG Magazine: Not only for Computer Gamers
NAG
Magazine, or rather New Age Gaming magazine has been around on the South
African circuit for years. It originally focused on computer gaming, but
has branched out to do hardware reviews, music, movie DVD and anime
reviews and, yes boardgame reviews as well. Yes, NAG magazine reviews
two of our boardgames on a regular basis, space permitting.
This crewmember has been a computer gamer for years (and years and years
– yes, I am that old) and has been reading NAG for a while. Whilst one
may not agree with some of the columnists’ viewpoints, it does not
detract from the fact that NAG is a darn good read. Recently they have
also started shipping a DVD full of game demos and other software as
opposed to the CD (in other words 4.7 Gigs of goodness as opposed to 640
megs).
Call us prejudiced, but the crew believes that if you decide to take
some time out from board gaming then take a look at NAG from your
nearest magazine retailer – especially if you’re into computer gaming
and hardware.

Featured Game of
the Month - Runebound 2nd Edition
The
dark lords are gathering, ancient powers are awakening, and a chill has
fallen across the land. It is a time of danger and rising evil. It is a
time of fear for the weak and powerless. It is a time of heroes willing
to face the darkness and bring the light of hope to a realm covered in
shadow.
Runebound has been on the boardgames catalogue for a while, and has been
a firm favourite of many of our customers. The second edition of
Runebound was recently released, and promises to be as major a hit as
its predecessor. Runebound comes in a square box that is filled with a
map, cards denoting hero and heroine statistics, weapons, armour, other
goodies and finally monsters and adventures. Counters for health,
vitality and money abounds, along with the innovative movement dice that
indicates the different terrain types one may journey through.
The big difference between this edition and the previous one is apparent
– twelve gorgeous miniatures, each representing a hero or heroine as
opposed to the cardboard cut-outs used previously. Rounding out the
changed package is the updated (and refined) rulebook. Game play is
still the same – heroes and heroines bravely criss-crossing the land,
fighting evil in an attempt to stop the evil high lord Margath. Players
compete to be the first to either kill the high lord or to defeat three
of the dragon lords (Margath’s lieutenants).
Gameplay happens in a round-robin fashion, with each player moving
(depending on the terrain indicated by the dice) and fighting when in an
encounter. Players can also go to the cities dotted through-out the land
to heal, obtain weapons, armour, goods, potions and spells and even to
hire henchmen to accompany them on their journey. Whilst this may not be
required at the start of the game, to survive against the dark lord one
will need a well-rounded party and equipment.
This game is well-suited to those that like a fantasy setting, that
spend countless hours in front of a computer screen playing Diablo and
Baldur’s Gate. With a number of expansions on the horizon it promises to
keep players enthralled for a long, long time. Furthermore, a little
‘cottage industry’ has sprung up with regards to Runebound on the web,
setting different adventures and quests to keep the game fresh and
interesting. Boardgamegeek is a treasure trove in this regard,
containing a number of such scenarios (see the link under additional
information for more).
