Welcome

After a hiatus the newsletter is back, filled with news and views about the board gaming hobby. A lot has happened since our last newsletter, we now have over 50 games available on the website, our retailer network has expanded and the boardgames.co.za crew is fired up for the remainder of 2005 to provide more quality games to you.

We have also decided to move the newsletter to a bi-weekly publication schedule starting with this one. We will also be announcing our monthly draw winner in the next newsletter.

We have also been busy arranging new events and expanding our product lines. We have confirmed our attendance at ICON and RAGE this year. You can find out more about this in our Out and About section on our website. We will also be at the SARCDA trade exhibition, which is a retailer only event.

We have added a number of retail partners and now have good representation outside the Gauteng area. We are still looking for a retailers in Durban, so if you know of a good store that should be stocking our games please let us know.

Fantasy Flight 2005 Release Schedule

A lot has happened since our last newsletter, and what more exciting news to kick off with than Fantasy Flight Games’ announcement of their upcoming 2005 releases. FFG has published several games on our list, such as DOOM, Runebound and Twilight Imperium III. What are they bringing to the table for 2005? Read on…

World of Warcraft the Board Game

Yes, the immensely popular computer MMORPG is coming to a table near you. 200-odd miniatures, a TI III sized box. Not a lot of information on this one yet, but it is generating a lot of excitement already.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark

A dungeon crawl adventure based in the Runebound milieu. Build the dungeon and take your heroes in to explore, exterminate monsters and find treasure. Based on the DOOM mechanics, it fleshes out the Runebound heroes - yes, you play with the actual heroes of the Runebound game. Personally, I am excited about this one – miniatures rather than cardboard stands and dungeons being explored bit by bit. Excitement!

Ingenious

Another hit game from Reiner Knizia, and nominated for SDJ - well, the German version that is.

Marvel Heroes

From the design team of War of the Ring comes a superhero game set in the Marvel universe. Again, not a lot of information on this one, but if it is anything like War of the Ring, it will look good and be fun to play.

Reprints

FFG have managed to get the rights to reprint a number of classic boardgames, such as Warrior Kinights, Through the Desert, Britannia, Arkham Horror and more. However, these are not mere reprints; they are updating and redesigning the games as well, in conjunction with the original authors.

Expansions

FFG have not forgotten their current games. On their 2005 publications list is an expansion to War of the Ring, Runebound 2nd edition (and a number of expansions for it, including Isle of Dread and Midnight), a DOOM expansion, the Lord of the Rings: Confrontation deluxe edition and more.

There is a lot more that can be listed and not enough space in our newsletter. Let’s hope that FFG will be able to keep to their punishing publications list as we are very excited by what they have in store for us in 2005.

Spiel de Jahres Nominations for 2005

Well, the Spiel des Jahres nominations for 2005 are in and what an interesting group of games. One of the nominated games will get the coveted SdJ 2005 award. For those wondering what this is about, the SdJ award is an award that "promotes the cultural asset of board games, to stimulate the idea of playing games with family and friends and to give orientation within the large choice of games available" and has been running since 1976.

Featured Game of the Month

Memoir '44 is this month's featured game.

Memoir ’44 can at first seem to be a light war game but that will be the wrong impression. This IGA (International Gamers Awards) two-player award winning game has a depth to it that rewards careful and strategic play. Yet it is still quick and fun to play – the ideal combination.

The box itself is filled with goodies – more than 140 plastic soldiers, tanks, guns and other equipment that brings back fond memories of one’s youth. There's also a stack of command cards, nine quick reference cards, a double-sided map, fourty-odd terrain tiles and a couple of card holders.

Where the game’s unique aspects start to appear is in the board setup – the terrain tiles are used to construct different looking terrain on the map itself. The map board itself is divided up into three sections – a left flank, a centre and a right flank section. Cards dealt to each player dictate where units can be activated (on one, or more of the areas) for either movement and/or firing. Dice is used to determine whether units are hit, and their morale – and no, these are not your normal six-sided dice, but ones that uses different symbols to show the effect of the roll.

Whilst it may sound complicated, it is not. The game plays quickly – around half an hour and is fun to play. Another great feature is the online support for Memoir ’44 by Days of Wonder – there are numerous extra scenarios (continually updated), battle reports and forums where Memoir ’44 can be discussed. The components in the box is of high quality and very reminiscent of a Euro game in terms of quality.
