Featured Game of the Month

Every month we will also be featuring a
game in our newsletter. This month it is
Carcassonne.
Carcassonne is the winner of the very
prestigious German Game of the Year 2001.
It's amazing what variety can be wrung from such a simple idea as laying
connected tiles. Carcassonne is a fine example of this as players place
tiles containing roads, cities, fields and cloisters.
Points are gained depending on where you place your tokens; knights on
cities, robbers on the roads, farmers in the fields and monks in the
cloisters.
Carcassonne is a tile-laying game set
against a background of Medieval France. It’s quick to play, yet it
combines simplicity and strategy in good combination.
Although Carcassonne is always referred to as a tile-laying game, it's
really closest in style to the traditional "pipe-laying" games, and thus
ultimately derives from the "Dominos" family of game design.
Carcassonne comes with a small set of high
quality components, including:
The most recent printing of Carcassonne
also includes "the river expansion". This set of 12 tiles was originally
offered as a free promotion before it was incorporated into the game.
Overall, the game design of Carcassonne is
superb. The game draws you in from your first tile placement and remains
fun to the end, even if you're running behind - because building the
lands of Carcassonne is fun in and of itself. Some of the best game
design elements:
-
Multiple strategies
-
All Players always thinking
-
Cooperation is encouraged
-
Competition is allowed
-
Randomness is well controlled
The great thing about this game is that
it is easy to play, but difficult to master due to the many game play
elements that you need to consider. The key strategic elements of the game
are:
-
Learning what the different tile types are and memorising them.
-
Learning how many of each tile type there are and what the remaining
tiles are throughout the game.
-
Being
able to visualise which tile fits where, especially when the tiles are
boxed in.
-
Choosing where to place and managing your limited number of
men.
-
Capitalising on lucrative farms.
-
Protecting your high yielding farms, cities and roads by ensuring that
your opponents do not take these away from you
You will have to master these elements
in order to succeed with Carcassonne. This game is very addictive and is
especially good with 2 players.
There are also many expansions
available with Carcassonne, which we are planning to bring in at a later
stage. These offer greater depth in game play and make the game a much
richer experience.
These expansions are Inns & Cathedrals, Traders and Builders, and King &
Scout. There are also Carcassonne variants available, which are Hunters
& Gatherers and The Castle. More information on these games can be found
on the Rio Grande Website.
